Kick-off meeting at PTB

October 2022

The SoMMet kick-off meeting was held at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig, Germany, on 11–12 October 2022. Organised as a hybrid event, it enabled the project partners to discuss and plan the activities for the first six months of the project.

Representatives of the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) attended the meeting in person. Scientists from the CLIMERS Research Unit at TU Wien and the ESA Centre for Earth Observation (ESRIN) joined remotely to exchange information about the SoMMet and FRM4SM projects.

On the second day, the partners visited the laboratories and calibration facilities of the PTB Department of Neutron Radiation. These facilities, together with those of other project partners, were subsequently used during SoMMet to characterise instruments for cosmic-ray neutron sensing (CRNS) and validate the associated measurement methods.

On 13 October 2022, following the two-day meeting, the partners visited the Marquardt test field site near Potsdam, one of the three test field sites used in the project.
