Related projects and networks
SoMMet formed part of a broader landscape of projects, observation networks and scientific initiatives concerned with soil moisture, cosmic-ray neutron sensing, climate observation and metrology. The following activities are closely related to the project's work, and several SoMMet partners contributed to or collaborated with them.
The entries are listed alphabetically.
Cosmic Sense was a DFG-funded research unit that advanced CRNS technology and its applications to soil moisture and other environmental water pools:
COSMOS-UK is a long-term network for monitoring soil moisture across the United Kingdom using CRNS and supporting measurements:
EURAMET's European Metrology Network for Climate and Ocean Observation promotes metrological best practice and collaboration in climate and ocean observations:
EURAMET Project 1400 – Moisture metrology development is an ongoing collaboration supporting European metrological infrastructure for measuring water and moisture content in materials. SoMMet contributed soil-specific reference methods, transfer standards and calibration approaches to this wider field:
The FRM4SM project, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), brings together expertise in in situ and satellite soil moisture measurements and develops methods, protocols and tools for validating satellite-based soil moisture products:
The International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) maintains and further develops a global database of in situ soil moisture observations and makes these data available for research and for validating satellite products and environmental models:
The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture supports the use of nuclear and related techniques in soil and water management and crop nutrition:

MAGDA (Meteorological Assimilation from Galileo and Drones for Agriculture) developed an observation and modelling toolchain using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), drones, Copernicus data and in situ sensors for weather forecasting and agricultural applications. The project ended in April 2025:
The completed MeteoMet and MeteoMet2 projects developed metrological methods for atmospheric quantities and Essential Climate Variables:
